The Mission

THE MISSION: Love God + Love People + Change the World!

The central focus of our fellowship is our shared, common mission "to guide people to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ." Christ-followers are people who are growing in three vital relationships in their lives. Christ-followers are growing in their...

  • Love for God,
  • Love for People; and their
  • Connection with God’s mission in the world.
  • Jesus made it very clear that when our lives reflect a great commitment to the Great Commandments (Matthew 22.36-40) and a Great Commission (Matthew 28.18-20) lifestyle, we are fulfilling the heart of what it means to follow Him.

    The Great Commandments:

Jesus said, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40 (NIV)

Jesus very clearly teaches that the entire Jewish Bible (our Old Testament) can be summed up by two commandments. There are two passions that God desires that His people have: to Love God, and to Love People! Loving God and loving your neighbor is what following Jesus is all about.

Then after the Lord’s resurrection and just before His ascension, Jesus repeatedly told His followers what they were to do. The Great Commandments teach Christ-followers how to live, with a passion to Love God and to Love People. The Great Commission is part of Christ’s Four Missional Mandates, and they teach what Christ-followers are to do:

    Mandate #1 -- Matthew 28:18-20

"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"

    Mandate #2 -- Luke 24:46-49

"He told them, 'This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.'"

    Mandate #3 -- John 20:19-21

"... 'Peace be with you!' After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, 'Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.'"

    Mandate #4 -- Acts 1:8

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

In giving these Four Missional Mandates, Jesus once and for all established for His followers what their core mission and purpose is to be! Namely to continue the mission He had begun, to be His hands and feet in the world, to help people become His followers. When fulfilling the mission of Jesus becomes the driving aim of a fellowship, that church has become a Missional Church.

Many churches are “mission-minded.” A mission-minded church may financially support and pray for missionaries, study about missions, periodically participate in a mission trip, and may even have a missions team that encourages such activity. Missions is an important part of the church, but many times becomes just one program among many others.

Missional,” on the other hand, refers to something much more profound. In a missional church, a passion for the missio Dei (mission of God) lies at the heart and core of the life of the church, it is in the church’s DNA. Everything the church does is aligned with carrying out the mission of God in its community. In a missional church, every church member is taught and led to understand that they are to personally connect with God’s mission, that they are the hands and feet of Jesus in their world (family, community, and workplace). Missional churches are filled with followers of Jesus who are passionately living missional lifestyles.

Church of God of San Jose does not merely recruit new members... We invite people to join "The Mission" - to connect with God's mission in this community and in the world.
